Re: States-ism

Besides, we should know better than to think it's a matter of the voters picking the wrong people.

Agreed.

If they wanted to play real hardball, they could just start a civil war.

Re: Orange is the new President

Nah. The problem with overlapping jurisdictional claims is that you actually need to satisfy everybody. One of the major reasons our development and infrastructure costs are so much higher than even the costs in, like, France, is that we often have twenty or thirty different governmental bodies tha...

Re: States-ism

I have been assured that small states are the best states, that giving them disproportionate clout is right and proper and essential to securing liberty in a constitutional republic. So, fuck it. The US Virgin Islands are getting 2 Senators in the Thoreaucracy. You mean the premise that elected Tru...

It would be a purely self-interested act by the Blues, but I can't see any call to object in the case of Puerto Rico.

Re: Orange is the new President

Adding another level of government just adds more push-me-pull-you to competing and overlapping jurisdictional claims between bureaucracies. Or worse, they 'pool' their powers the way they do with asset forfeiture, information sharing and code enforcement. I'm all for the first. Otherwise, we could...

Also, there are multiple English footballs, one of which real football derived from. Further, Canadians themselves have their own variation of American football (they say it's based on rugby football, but they throw on helmets and padding) and most of them mean it or the American game when they say...

Re: Orange is the new President

I'm not sure we need fewer states, and I'm not entirely against splitting up the biggest states. I do think we may need some "regional" level of governance between states and the national government (and to move some federal powers to bodes at that level).

So, people have been poking at what weird and socially-biased results you can get by throwing publically available corpuses of information at some quick code to determine positive and negative associations. Some actual code examples. Positive values are favorable, with larger numbers more favorable....

Lately, I've been hearing Blues push the idea that libertarians support the freedom to molest children. This won't help.

The Ferrari concept (as I suppose it is until they actually start mass-producing it) is pretty gorgeous-looking for an SUV.

TIL that straight male friends can never be roommates. For 49 years? The police have never rousted that grumpy homeless guy who hangs out in front of their place over the same span of time. Neither have those two guys gone off to an assisted living center, since they'd have to be at least 70 by now...

Re: Debate: Be an Anarchist, Not a Minarchist

If you have a system with people in it, it's going to end up working to punish or reward people on some arbitrary basis preferred by the group in charge. And there will always be some group in charge. You'll never get rid of hierarchy while things have to get done, even if it's just the power dispar...

Yeah gawd I frickin' hate that one. "And go where" is met with "that's your problem - technically you can do it so fuck you it's a valid social contract*" which is amusing because the Venn is strong with, "Well if you're driven by economic necessity is it REALLY a choice" for sex work or even "capi...

Five pages arguing over the minutia of just how small the government can be. It's like some kind of libertarian discussion board around here all of a sudden.
"But we're already in anarchy, ha!" isn't minutia, it's a proud declaration of having tried to waste the other peoples' time.

And I think Hugh and Nicole are rejecting that framework entirely, and arguing that any concrete political program is unjust. And that means that everyone else is confused.
If they and/or painboy had started with "lulz, we live in anarchy, nothing means anything", we could have saved some time.

Re: Debate: Be an Anarchist, Not a Minarchist

OK, states and anarchy have the same problems and are literally the same. I'd like to see fewer people treated inhumanely because of minor crimes. How will anarchy be any better for that end if anarchy and statism have the same problems and are literally the same? Is it just a relabeling of the sam...

So whether your standard is "delivers justice", "enforces rules in a non-arbitrary way", "lives up to its own basic principles", or the very real standard that someone definitely argued for "100% just outcomes perfectly voluntary everyone gets to do anything they want", the system doesn't seem to b...

Wait, wait, wait. You have multiple totally-not-states, but any one or two is going to be able to dictate this exile to all the perpetrator's neighbors, even if they belong to many other totally-not-states. How? It would be similar to when counties and states have policies in place to deal with jur...
