Re: Orange is the new President

I think the problem is that people are a bit too enamored of an idea akin to the Efficient Markets Hypothesis. Bluntly, I'm looking back through the last several pages, and I'm lost as to what claim you're trying to advance and what position you actually think you're arguing against. You keep snark...

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

The opening on the campus isn't bad, and the hospital bit is dull but serviceable. The sequence in the helicopter is a mess , trying to convey too much information without much elegance or entertainment value (Jack Ryan is a Regular Dude who talks about football with his subordinates, Jack Ryan's pe...

Man, you can't gripe on a conference call about how back in the day, you could drop the n-bomb all the time and drag black people to death behind cars without people taking it the wrong way, anymore.

Re: Orange is the new President

I don't think the Baltic have much an alternative to getting conquered, other than fighting a guerilla war. The Russians may not have the stomach for that. Having allies is another option, and the one they're taking. As for the Russian government's stomach for dealing with a backyard guerrilla war,...

Re: Orange is the new President

The closest we've probably ever come to an intentional nuclear war was in Able Archer 83. That was a gigantic NATO exercise that looked exactly like an attack on the Soviet Union would. The Soviets were damn scared that we were gonna go for it, but held off. One of the times we were closest. And it...

Not, to be sure, that I want the US to be on the hook for Europe's defense or nuclear deterrence. There are just better ways to handle a transition away from managing the bulk of Europe's defense than this.

Re: Orange is the new President

I'm not sure why we all want use of military force to be an easy and quick policy option for everyone. It's certainly not a good thing when we do it. It had better be at least as quick and easy as it is for the people knocking on your door. Other views are simply naive. This is how WWI started. And...

Use of some amount of force for some amount of time had better be as quick and easy as it is for the people knocking on your door. Punching back at the guy knocking on your door doesn't necessarily require the same resources as knocking on somebody else's door. Yup. That being said, NATO, outside o...

Re: Orange is the new President

Cause a bunch of Euro countries with too much army sitting around has never turned out bad in the past. Right? If they manage to stay united under one military alliance, it's not as scary. It's when they start Great Powering at each other than the wars start. As much as we worry about Russia and co...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

Team Painboy & Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies. Oatmeal Creme Pies are the market. They're not as good as I remember them, when I've had them as an adult. Formula change, taste shift? Couldn't say. Still pretty good. Also, when I did a taste taste of a bunch of Twinkie imitations back when they we...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

I continue to not fear The Algorithm in its luddite memetic mutation sense. I actually like that, say, Google's music player notes that I've liked a number of songs by this vaguely retro-80s dance musician, and it tells me, "Hey, this guy is playing down the street from your office in the near futur...

Moon Pies are like chicken pox or the cartons of the 1980s. If you were exposed as a child, you're ok, but if you try to pick them up as an adult, you're liable to wind up sterile.

I know, right? I was disappointed that this was about the best video I could find on YouTube.

Hell, I'm stunned nobody's swiped this idea for bigger rodeos. Maybe they have and I haven't heard of it, though.

Shoko Asahara and some followers, hanged-by-the-neck-until-dead for their involvement in the 1995 nerve agent attack in the Tokyo subway. This is very strange to me; I was in college when that happened. I was mostly surprised that Japan has executions, and that they're by hanging. Oh, yeah. Somethi...

Sometime in the past couple years -- after moving to Atlanta -- Jeff and I were watching an old talk show whose host (maybe Dick Cavett?) was interviewing a pre-"Wrath of Khan," pre-"Fantasy Island" Ricardo Montalban, who talked about bullfighting -- and made a point of saying something a la "Now t...

I imagine bullfighting would have a much better rep if the odds were that much in favor of El Toro.

(Also, it would be about as rare as Russian Roulette.)
