Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

Hey guys, anyone else remember this exact, same conversation from 30 years ago? Yes. Though I will point out that the issue, then as now, was much bigger in the sort of workplace Thoreau has to deal with it in (and his region) than in the rest of the world. (That should be a safe-enough phrasing in...

Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

There's this thing like "you are all monsters who shouldn't be able to speak in public and certainly not to impressionable minds, we will not debate we will seek to deplatform!" Exactly which of these people have been deplatformed or have even had anyone beyond some angry, impotent kid on Tumblr at...

Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

If I wanted to note that most (not all) of the older Chinese restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley are or were run by Cantonese speakers, while the newer ones are often run by Mandarin speakers (a factoid that I got from a recent newspaper article) I would be hit with "But, wait, I know a guy who o...

Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

First, if I had to present a one line summary of the IDW, my first stab at it would probably be "people who are basically liberal--or at least more liberal than conservative--but dissent from some tenets of liberal orthodoxy and enjoy offering contrarian takes." So, any centrist or liberal writer b...

Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

A buddy of mine knew Shapiro back in middle school. He's always been this guy. I think this recent Cathy Young article is a better take on the IDW than anything Shapiro has to say I'm still trying to wrap my head around the IDW, minus the luminaries excluded in the first post, being anything meanin...

And if you have to shut one down, you just got yourself a nice big greenspace park that can be allowed to go feral and put in some wildlife-friendly wetlands and hiking trails and such.
AKA mosquito breeding habitats.

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

For that matter, here's an ever simpler possibility, regarding the dark forest: maybe for some-odd reason having to do with earth or other planets, we're among the few inhabited planets that don't have some sort of inherent radio communication ability, similar to how other animals have built-in "ra...

1) The speed of light. Yes, even if they communicate via something that isn't light and produces stronger interactions than gravitational waves (let's say "fifth force waves" to keep it vague), I doubt that those waves will travel faster than light. The paradoxes that tachyons can cause just fuck e...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

Well, Fermi's paradox, the Drake Equation, etc. all really speak to "tool using-aliens" in the end. We don't have any idea of the frequency of intelligence or tool-using intelligence; we don't seem to have any other creatures as smart as us who aren't tool-users, so we've got a sample size of one.

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

Even in on a Pangea-world, it'd probably still have plenty of places where it'd be cheaper to lay oceanic cables than route things the long way around on land. And if some military powers on different parts of the supercontinent are pointing nukes at each other, they'd probably have early warning r...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

A handful of planets, after billions of years of false starts, achieve a level of technology that enables them to know what atoms are. Most of them, after a few centuries, give nuclear launch codes to a politician who assumes the other guy will blink first. Mind, that scenario requires a situation—...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

Honestly, if certain tenets of physics remain more-or-less valid in the face of future research, it's likely that no technological species will have much capacity to harm denizens of other solar systems. Colonization ships would take massive amounts of energy even for multi-generational voyages. Co...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

Even now, with radio still less than two human lifetimes old, a LOT of our communication has moved away from that, to things undetectable from space--transmissions over cable, fiber optics, etc. Presumably, we'd have moved even more of our communication off-air if our planet were slightly different...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

Of course, if you iterate on the Dark Forest premise, it gets even messier. Assuming you're not just, for whatever reason, sending killer robots to drop rocks on every habitable planet you can see and instead waiting until primitive civilizations become detectable...Well, what would you really do wh...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

My beef with the Dark Forest theory is that it presumes that advanced aliens have stuck to radio technology. We've likely only been able to detect and distinguish alien radio waves for less than 4 decades. Which means we could only detect aliens 40 light years away No, we could detect transmissions...

Re: The Abortion Thread

Given that I've been seeing people push the idea that the current situation has nothing to do with Team Red political dominance and the expectation of a anti-Roe USSC, but is in fact due to some sort of backlash against the pro-choice side supporting on-demand late-term abortions? Those people are ...

I may be in a bubble, but are there really that many extremists on the abortion-on-demand-after-24-weeks side of things? The screaming I hear about late-term abortions is mostly surrounding stopping laws by anti-abortion extremists to ban certain procedures that are already only or damn near only u...

Short version: If the abortion rights movement had kept to "reasonable compromise" and "ethical complexity", we'd have been back to back alleys and coat hangers years ago. Longer version: Really, at the top level, I've seen variations of Hughes' argument bubbling around about abortion, lately. But n...
