Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

(TIL medicine is not STEM. Biology is STEM, engineering is STEM, but medicine is not. That's a weird distinction. It's especially weird when you consider that "medicine" is basically "the engineering part of human biology." Exactly. That does strike me as a weird, if not stupid distinction. But it ...

Hong Kong and the Future of Freedom https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/13/opinion/hong-kong-protests-trump.html I share his distaste with Trump not giving a fuck, but I find myself wondering what he thinks it matters. A very different president was in office when Tiannamen Square happened, and what cam...

(TIL medicine is not STEM. Biology is STEM, engineering is STEM, but medicine is not. That's a weird distinction. Is being a medical doctor just not academic-y enough?) The bad news, of course, is that many students have experienced inappropriate treatment, and some people need to improve their beha...

Here's a completely incoherent bit of nonsense that was published in the Opinion section of the NY Times. The author starts by positing that we're going to have a post-scarcity economy in the future, then says that the only reason we have scarcity is capitalism, then says that the obvious way forwa...

Re: Iran (so far away)

Like in Fujairah, dozens of ships ranging from massive oil tankers to smaller pleasure boats, traditional dhows and cargo vessels ply the waters of the strait and the Gulf of Oman. The navies of Iran, Oman, the UAE and the U.S. regularly patrol, but the waters are vast and lit only by the moonlight...

Re: Video Games!

Keanu in cyberpunk 2077 doesn't make me more excited about the game bc that initial game play demo was not too hot. I am reserving judgements and a lot can happen in the next nine months. I don't know, I'm pretty sure you couldn't have cast a better Johnny Silverhand. Although I'm kind of curious a...

Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

Clinton was Clinton, not Team Blue. I don't see any reason to think the Blues institutionally give a fuck for anything past 50%+1 and 270 EC votes. The Blues I hear from like to imagine demographic shifts mean that they never have to give a shit about what the 49% or less of the public that votes R...

Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

In general, I think that the Reds have the more stark political calculus. The Reds understand that any votes past 50%+1 are wasted votes, while the Blues have a more grandiose political vision. Hastert used to have a rule of only moving on things supported by "A majority of my majority." With the B...

This is one heck of a correction. Correction: This article originally stated that the price of Acthar had gone “from just $40 in 2000 to over $40,000 today.” A spokesperson for Mallinckrodt emailed to request a correction that Acthar actually costs $38,892 today. Gizmodo regrets the error. We also ...

And in terms of criticizing Google...it's valid. If you don't have the balls to go, "Free speech, motherfuckahs, we host anything!" and instead have terms of service, you're gonna get backlash when you ignore repeated complaints about someone's violations of those terms that piss other people off. tl;dr Some people want to ban Google from San Francisco's Pride Parade because YouTube didn't come down hard enough on a commentator who made racist and homophobic slurs against a journalist. "Some people" demand any kind of bullshit. This hasn't actually resulted in a ban. Mind, if the Maoists had...

I remember people posting videos of the FedEx truck standing in front of their house for a few minutes and then moving on without anyone getting out because it was 10 O out and the driver didn't want to get out of his warm truck. You can find them for USPS as well. Nice days, too. They just stop, l...

Re: Petty annoyances

It's a variable thing by location, from what I've read and seen angry people record and post to YouTube. In some places, it's the USPS drivers who pull those antics, sometimes it's UPS or FedEx.

They usually do it more for private homes than businesses, though.
