Re: Twitter!

I just retweeted Kim Kardashian. I feel weird. But then, this block of tweets, amongst all the yammering about her product lines, is weird in a way I approve of: https://i.imgur.com/JC1NvaE.png FWIW, there have been a few times before when she said or did something I approve of, and even times when...

Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

There is a lot of wheat mixed in with the chaff, which makes it a shame that they are going downhill. For instance, this is an article that could plausibly have appeared in Reason: https://quillette.com/2019/09/12/anti-pornography-campaigners-pseudo-scientific-treadmill/ Hell, that could have appea...

Re: If We Build It, They'll Probably Still Come

Cali bans private prisons, including ICE detention centers . The private prisons angle is a joke of course (Blues can stop worrying about the justice system, now!), but including ICE detention centers in that is a shot across the frickin' bow. The four affected facilities are a significant part of ...

Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

I read Soh charitably because of her own experience as a gender-non-conforming youth who desisted. And I read her non-charitably because her arguments and claims look like the bizarro-world version of what transgender people I've known and heard from go through. And in the end, she still went to ba...

Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

The fraud was an article by a guy who claimed to have been involved in DSA. Quillette also had Andy Ngo before they quietly disappeared him from their contributor listings. "Craniology" has been a recurring attempt to rebrand phrenology. It's pretty much the go-to thing mentioned about them online....

The phenology, conversion therapy defending, and outright fraud were one thing, but working for the TSA is just disreputable.

Re: Money for Nothing: the Universal Basic Income

Unclear to me which way it would go because it depends on how people value marginal increases in purchsaing power vs marginal buffers from rent too damn high. A flat UBI basically plays out like you get some amount of money to stay put but effectively more money to move. The difference between valu...

There's also that tweet from Pence's account that is obviously written by Trump. We know Pence is a sycophant, but that's a new level.
Pence has probably been having screaming fits in private that Trump's stayed in office this long.

Re: If We Build It, They'll Probably Still Come

The man has no standards. Nor ethics nor morals nor the slightest hint of anything remotely resembling a conscience. And the same holds true for anyone who still supports him. Oh I don't doubt some people do, thanks to partitioning and denial. But for him, this is a reptilian lack of.... No, that's...

Re: In the Not Too Distant Future...

Avoid Red Zone Cuba as a first watch, because the movie itself is just so bad. (Some sources call it the worst professionally-made English language movie ever.)

The Kaiju ones are a good starting point, I agree.

Jane-Thor in the comics was referred to as Thor. It says it right there on the thing: "Whoseover wields this hammer, if xe be worthy. shall have the power of THOR".
Which, weirdly enough, was consistent with an old What If where Storm became Thor.

Fun Fact: Fifty Shades of Grey is Twilight fanfic. Yup. Of the "Wow, almost everyone is OOC..." variety, I would have to guess. Only a little, that's the fucked-up part. Well, Bella to dumb college student is a gimme. Whiny vampire boy to swaggering sadist, not so much...and I realize I have no ide...

Re: We can win the war in Vietnam!

Since it was Donald Trump making the claim that these talks were scheduled but then cancelled, the first response should be to question whether they were ever really scheduled in the first place. Right, but most critics skipped that part and said that the talks should never ever be scheduled. And o...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

Something struck me for the first time. You see, "slash" and "slashfic" was called that because people used the form "Kirk/Spock" to describe that original pairing and later pairings. But that notation isn't used as much, anymore—the thing since the early 2000s has been to make portmanteau names ("S...

Many years ago the wife didn't believe me about Harry Potter fandic (namely it's existence and volume thereof) and the first story we clicked on was mpreg involving Harry and the British guy who died These are two honest questions: is “fandic” a thing, and what on Earth is it (or do I want to know)...

Re: Money for Nothing: the Universal Basic Income

Even at PT hours $5k a year is $4.80/hr, which no one nowhere is paying regardless of minimum wage laws. Why would wages take such a precipitous dive as a result of a UBI? Because the person is already going to be getting $10k a year. The value of the job is $15k a year. The company isn't going to ...

Re: Money for Nothing: the Universal Basic Income

So using some simple numbers let's say everyone gets $10,000 a year for UBI. A fast food place offers an additional $5000 a year to work there. If a non-citizen wants to work there they're not getting the other $10,000 a citizen gets and the company isn't going to make that up. What am I missing he...

Re: Money for Nothing: the Universal Basic Income

I'm Team Painboy on this. I'm not sure how a significant UBI (of the "provides a comfortable existence" sort) wouldn't set up a serious fiscal problem with immigration. And just making it unavailable to immigrants would put them at a serious disadvantage in the job market. Mind, it probably wouldn't...
