Re: The Chuckle Factory

There's a bit by a standup comedian (I feel like maybe Louis CK?) that's along the lines of, "You're out shopping and you see a disabled person but you don't stare at them and then you feel good about yourself. Why are you so proud of yourself? That now they can shop without anyone staring at them? ...

Re: To DVDs and Beyond: The Netflix Thread

I'm bingeing Altered Carbon after we put the tr0gling to bed. The book has been on my radar for a while, but given what else I've read from Morgan, it's going to be chock full o' retarded socialism. The series is, but I can overlook that for the visuals. That show is so fucking dumb. The brain isn'...

Re: There's a Word for That

I would have said "Expy" but that's the TV Tropes word for a fictional character who is unmistakably another fictional character. Their term is "No Celebrities Were Harmed" which is rather clunky.

Maybe slightly misremembering the context? Anyway, I was also surprised at how uncommon the generic is for that.

Re: If We Build It, They'll Probably Still Come

If you can pull of the proper faux-innocent attitude, you could try asking your wretched MIL if she thinks her grandkids should be separated from all of their relatives, and the twins separated from each other (because they have different naughty bits), and locked up in Walmarts or tent cities beca...

Re: If We Build It, They'll Probably Still Come

I'm frustrated by how many arguments I see (genuine bad reasoning or just being assholes?) conflate opposing a certain type of punishment with saying "there shouldn't be any punishment at all." You try to say the government's actions are unacceptable and the response is "Well, those people broke the...

Re: To DVDs and Beyond: The Netflix Thread

I'm halfway through Anon and getting more and more dubious that it's going to pull itself together. It's an interesting premise but really vast swaths of the movie are just shots of a room full of people staring off into space.

Lots of naked boobies tho

To DVDs and Beyond: The Netflix Thread

At this point there are enough Netflix original shows that they could have their own thread apart from the TV thread, so why not? Because I am me I will kick it off with a complaint. Marcella season 1 wasn't memorable but was decent; from what I recall a good central mystery but an annoying main cha...

I read a decent chunk -- I see the craft but it's not my cup of tea. I just couldn't help sharing that was the first thing that jumped out at me and drove me nuts even though this is OBVIOUSLY NOT AN ACTUAL TV SHOW.

It's good, but it's not like biting into it is like getting a molly-fueled double-blow. "Molly-fueled double-blow". That is a very nice turn of phrase sir. It keeps popping up in my head ever since I read it. I'll probably put it in rotation for conversation. Well done Shem. Wait, is a double-blow ...

Re: I just don't get it

I am not familiar with the "hanging a"! Perhaps it is a Southern thing. I also don't understand how anyone can notice what tone of voice young women are using when they have to, like, listen, like, to the words, like, through an endless, like, parade of like-as-filler utterances. OH MY GOD STOP. STO...
