Re: What are you reading?

I'm sure by "at once" you mean "one right after the other," but I initially read it as "simultaneously" and was envisioning someone with a book in each hand, trying to hold two more up in their toes, gaze desperately flicking from one page to another. She was talented. I read Mayor of Casterb...

I finished Hardy's Jude the Obscure. And now I'm ready to kill myself.
I knew a girl who one summer read all of Hardy's novels at once. She was never the same.

Re: Twitter!

I especially love how "use of alphabets" is one of the warning signs. Reminds me of my teen years, when I used to babysit and sing educational songs to my toddler charges: "...W, X, Y and Z. Now I know my ABCs! Hail Lord Satan and Crowley." I am going to sing it this way from now on. You haven't be...

I had a brief moment where I read 'Ivan Stang' and I hoped we were getting some slack.
The rest of the world may see him as orange, but we know Trump's really fucking pink.

Re: Tiny Triumphs

Found another one yesterday, he'd been off water for a few days. He might not make it. I've got a 7-year-old girl lined up to take them over soon, which'll be good. For all of us. When I was young, I knew a few old guys who had a beef around that they never did seem to get around to butchering. I di...

Re: The Lust to Acquire

Orange amps are great. You could get it and then maybe a few pedals to stick in front of it, and then you'll probably need a new guitar with P-90s to plug into it....

Re: Tiny Triumphs

After two weeks and sixty some-odd thousand acres burnt, nights spent beating flames back from around horse pastures and houses and days spent cutting fence and moving cows out ahead of it, the fire's contained. It should burn itself out soon. Most of the rest of the crew have started branding on th...

Fire here, too. Up to about 40,000 acres now. Spent the last few days scrambling around cutting fence and trying to keep it out of the horse pasture. There are scads of State and Federal firefighters cruising around in vehicles watching, doing nothing, going home at night. I wish this were Anarchist...

I think it'd do well. Lots of fat, lots of sugar. As you and Steinbeck touched on, consistency is at least as important as quality. He's right about the cheese. I love queso fresco, and slip across the border to eat it all the time. Lots of small ranchers in Mexico will cycle their cows and have a f...

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1

I didn't know that. I've never heard of that crazy cook story, though there's a story of a cook who killed the Diamond A wagon boss a bit west of there. He was a young kid whose family were homesteaders. Lots of homesteaders at the time, around Cloverdale, and there had been a lot of hogs gone feral...

We're fixing to start branding...
Branding? In 2018? Really? Huh.
Yup. Can't sell unbranded cattle in New Mexico or anywhere else I've ever been. I know in Texas and further east it's different, but we brand, earmark, vaccinate and castrate. With horsies.

This ranch is closed off to the public, so we don't get any on us. I think they finish up going down 81 to the border, though I'm not sure. But yeah, the Divide's right in my back yard.

Re: What are you reading?

Foucault's Pendulum never quite got there for me, though it's been long enough ago that I might need to revisit it. Not long after reading it, I found the book Flicker by Theodore Roszak, and it was what I wanted Foucault's Pendulum to be.

 Hidalgo County. About where New Mexico, Chihuahua and Sonora come together. That’s not too far. Maybe we should meet up some time for some food, lies, and recreational drinking. Angus bulls are annoying assholes.
It doesn't take much for bulls of all breeds to go well beyond annoying.
Scattering bulls in the wind right now, and I'm ready to start running yearlings. There never was a bull that wouldn't have made a better steer.
