It is also true that the lead can’t act.
Soooooo the forced Gilmore girl attitude is herself? Huh.
She was notably cringey on Mad Men
Was she? I always thought it was her weird little friend* everyone hated?

Re: Putin on the Writs

A good thing to help keep things in perspective is knowing that Russia has the same GDP as Australia. Russia's military is also an aged shadow of its former Cold War self. So ask yourself how much of an existential threat Australia with a dilapidated army poses to the US. Yes they have nukes but MAD...

Social security will never run out of money as long as we have young people to pillage and we cut benefit payments. Thank you Captain Obvious.

Re: Fragments of an avotoast anthropology

I see only one brief mention in that massive article of the huge drop in average testosterone in the last few decades. That seems somewhat important and doesn't rely upon questionable social surveys for data. I thought low testosterone was for the most part bunk. A way to sell more supplements. My ...

Re: Fragments of an avotoast anthropology

This is another of several datapoints in a series titled "things that most people talk about as local culture but surprise are happening all over the globe for some reason". Nativism, retreat from trade, later employment starts, middle aged men in particular bailing on the workforce early, limited ...

Scans of an 1861 Japanese children's book about the American Revolutionary War. More than a little jazzed up to entertain the kids. Ben Franklin points out targets for John Adams' ridiculously manly use of a cannon , George Washington fights the minions of an evil British noble to protect his wife ...

Re: Speaking in tongues (the "learning languages" thread)

English speakers (and esp writers) should be the last to complain about leftover legacy quirks of language. Someone once told me that English has more idiomatic expressions than any other language. Don't remember the source and I don't know if it is true. But idioms usually convey specific informat...

Re: Observations of the Random sort

Reading remarks by some Blues online, I remain fascinated by how presidential responsibility for things like the economy works. 1) The bubble-burst and recession that started before GWB took office was the Bush recession, of course. 2) The later severe downturn before the Obama election was all Bus...

Also, counting and dates seems nice and simple so far. January is literally "one-month", February is "two-month", and so on, and something like "April 5th" is literally just "four-month five-day"; a number like "43" is just "four tens three". Did I say it was nice and simple? I was wrong. Korean ha...

Apparently the Red Pill folks have some compatriots across the pond. Inside China’s training camps, where boys are learning how to be men It was the fifth day of an 18-day course held on weekends for boys aged seven to 11 that aims to rescue them from their day-to-day, all-female environment and pre...

Well bad news on the adaptor I bought. Despite looking exactly the same size, the one I bought is apparently a nanometer too small and won't slot in. Looking around online, anything that might work, like ones with changeable tips, are close to $30 or more. So I just bit bullet and sent the manufactu...

Re: The Techno-Bleg Thread

Huh. I don't think I've ever interacted with a monitor that didn't just plug directly into the wall. It's just a design decision whether to put the AC-DC adapter inside the housing of the monitor, or to keep it outside. Every flat-panel monitor is going to have one anyway, and there are pros and co...

The AC adapter for one of my monitors looks to have died. I chatted with the company that made it and they offered to send me a new one but with a $30 shipping fee. I found an AC adapter on amazon for $12 that appears to have all the same specs and connections type. The only difference is that it do...

Democrats in Blue states would be better off if they could suppress voter turnout I'm Red counties. Have they tried to do that? They certainly have an incentive.
I'm sure they would if they could but there really isn't a mechanism to do so that wouldn't also hurt themselves.

Re: Vote or Die

I meant that if a greater number of voters favored the Republicans they would be the ones trying to expand voter registration and the Democrats would be the ones trying to make voting more difficult. I know this because that is exactly what happened after the Civil War and well into the 20th centur...

All of the "everyone needs to vote!" stuff comes from the left because that's not the right's tactic. First few episodes of Daredevil Season 3 are pretty good, but after all the recent Marvel TV letdowns I'm not being too optimistic. Oh, look. Voting machines are doing weird glitchy stuff that ends in Republican votes. I'm sure it's fine. We're fine. I'm fine. It seems it was due to bad UI/user error.
