Re: Brexit: what say ye?

I'm a big proponent of a hybrid system where just the House is elected via parliamentary rules. That way no more gerrymandering and you would give smaller parties a possible voice in federal government.

It does seem lately that the bar for dystopia for many people is now "things exist that might inconvenience me."

A college student in Chicago ignored a man who was catcalling her. So he raped her and strangled her to death. https://www.insider.com/chicago-student-catcall-murder-charges-2019-11 (I have been assured that women who object to catcalling are all snobby bitches. If this is true, then I guess we can...

I actually have discovered that I really like classical guitar, but I've never cared much for guitar in rock. As a pianist, I do really enjoy piano, but dead_elvis isn't wrong about it having limited colors in a lot of ways. No one ever plays a single-line single-note melody on piano as a first cho...

I should get around to Snyder's Watchmen . I keep catching clips from it and noping out, but I feel like I'm missing the full right to shake my head at it without seeing it. (And I might actually enjoy some of it.) The biggest problem with it is he just doesn't quite understand all the material. He...

Michael Keaton by himself made Multiplicity watchable. It had a completely stupid premise and he actually made it entertaining. I'm not sure many other actors could have done that.

The Global Fertility Crash While the global average fertility rate was still above the rate of replacement—technically 2.1 children per woman—in 2017, about half of all countries had already fallen below it, up from 1 in 20 just half a century ago. For places such as the U.S. and parts of Western E...

What kind of crazy elastic band are you using? Just take the whole package and flop it over the band. It's like a hammock for it.

Oh go crawl back into your hovel. There's nothing wrong with that house. It's not like you're going to live in it, or even near it.

I'm slightly less sympathetic to him being that he bulldozed what was left and built this monstrosity on top of it.

There’s a class element to be sure. There’s another element of inside/outside a tribe who sees things that way. Oh, and alcohol. I think the fist fight thing is very much more about tribe and it's also contextual. IIRC Jared Diamond in one of his books talked about how when two aboriginal males fro...

I'm pretty sure We Are Legion / We are Bob series is the most autistic sci fi. Easily more autistic than the Martian / Artemis Andy Weir books that formerly held the slot. I read the first one, and while it was cute at times the good ideas seemed to dry up about half way through. Never really thoug...

I think there is real consensus across both parties that debt and deficits don't matter - bringing it up is loser politics and nobody can imagine a world where the US treasury isn't the sexiest debt instrument among truly fugly competition. I wonder sometimes that since we have had a massive debt f...

Well the GOP isn't going to say anything because it happened on their watch and the Dems aren't going to bring it up since that might highlight the fact that there's no money for all those goodies they want to add.

At some point this will matter. Unfortunately by then it will likely be too late.
