Re: Speaking in tongues (the "learning languages" thread)

The counting words are called “classifiers,” as opposed to “classes,” like grammatical gender. Classifiers sometimes collapse into a smaller number and become classes. Eg, in future instead of dozens of counting words Korean may have a handful of genders. The classifiers also often start out as word...

Re: When journalism goes bad

It more just came to mean “lying,” which is dumb because the point was to describe something much more specific than that.

The only thing worse and more business-speaky than using "challenges" to refer to problems that one wants fixed is calling them "opportunities" No, the damn software isn't working as expected. That's a fucking problem. Hahaha In my work I frequently interview people and ask about their problems, wh...

Re: Home $weet Home

If dubs cooks, which is most nights, we eat at the dining table. In our old place the TV was in the next room from there, and it might be on with him listening to it while he cooked, or else he would listen to podcasts or I would read to him. Now the TV isn't nearby so it's either podcasting or read...

Re: Home $weet Home

I have minor hate for tv over fireplace. Too high. Way too high! No idea why people want to do that. Besides, your fireplace is probably in your formal living room where you don’t want your TV at all anyway. Seriously though I don’t ever have a TV in the room where people hang out if we have ...

Re: Home $weet Home

so now they do have the TV on while at the dining table at dinner Oh god. Like their dining room is a saloon? I'm not a fan of eating in the living-room in front of the TV. Mostly on account of a 'No food in the living room' rule to keep the house from becoming a shitpit. I have done it, and will a...

Re: Home $weet Home

The isolated dining room is the most worthless trash space in any floor plan. I don’t think I have ever in my adult life seen one actually being used. Are you serious? That's absurd. Don't you ever get invited into other people's homes? While I've seen formal dining rooms that are only used on "spe...

Tbh I also don't know who all these people are who are hanging out in the kitchen at entertaining-type times. We don't do that and it doesn't go that way at Dubs' parents' place either. Or at my parents' place where the kitchen is really in the middle of everything.

Re: Home $weet Home

The Houston Chronicle article about developers building smaller homes (last post on the previous page of this thread) had a lot of specifics about some of the developments and models of floorplan, so I went to look at some from one of the developers yesterday and I have to say...they felt small and ...

I got a blowout today for the first time ever and it’s pretty amazing. My hair is totally straight and flat and sleek like I could never do myself. It was for a work thing and I totally feel like I dressed up like one of the sales/accounts girls for the day. I'm intrigued. So it's better than flat ...

Every time I read it, I get mad about how voters are also going to die.

Ellie, I'm directing this advise to you because of your immediate need, but I am HIGHLY recommending it to everyone. Back away from the Facebook. Please. Just close the tab/app, and look away. Not completely. Not forever. But at least until you can go between meals without thinking about politics. ...

It is truly a rag now. Did you see my tweet about how their big harrowing Yemen famine story ended with a kicker that used “reign” for “rein” and mis-capitalized “Western”?

I was able to find a number of 3-4 bedroom flats in London. Granted, they weren’t the norm, but they weren’t rare. How does it work there - are they leased or owned or rented or what? Every major metro area has some large apartments. (The point of the Manhattan penthouse suites is that you get an e...

Cooking for others is fundamentally social to me. Open forever. My stated - if slightly tongue in cheek - requirements for my next hood are 1) I should be suck a chicken wing directly off of my cooktop and blow it outside and 2) it should make no sound in the process. I feel like there's like three...

It's not sportsbar, it's dirty money . Honestly, I would trade Iran straight up for Saudi Arabia right now as a client state. Iran is much closer to liberalizing and the threat of shutting off western universities to Saudi elites is enough to keep them more in line. Also, Iranian scientists are bet...

Wait, Heidi Cruz actually voted for Donald Trump?! Trumpalos be cray cray.
The judgment of anyone who would marry Ted Cruz is inherently suspect.
True.
P sure marrying Ted Cruz takes you past suspicion and into proof territory.
