Re: Light laffs

It'll be a struggle to recognize that, as someone who posts the equivalent of "LOGIC THEREFORE I'M RIGHT" is demonstrating some pretty serious misunderstanding of what logic is. "Repeat Intro to Logic" serious.

But smart people can be really dumb so sure.

Re: Star Trek Wankery

By way of a friend-of-a-friend being one of the TNG writers, I was given a pretty cool explanation for what happened with Wesley. Upshot: It was the writers' strike. What happened was this: The TNG team had regular meetings where the writers and producers got together and reviewed the state of the ...

18 months of work + 30 years of coasting with zero chance of losing your job = golden retirement. What's not to love?

Re: Runaway trolley ethics and robot cars

I think the average speed will increase, as the robot car will be able to maintain a higher speed under congested conditions. Also, they will tend to smooth traffic flow, resulting in less congestion to begin with. I would further assume that, unlike that proportion of human drivers who drive with ...

Re: Net Neutrality

I think the torrent thing is a much smaller percentage than you claim. A lot of it is due to speed being important for web services. It's hard to disrupt existing players if the can pay to throttle you. The claim that cable isn't a monopoly is a bit like saying my electric company isn't a monopoly....

Re: Net Neutrality

There hasn't been anything like a monopoly since AT&T was broken up. People are just butthurt they can't get the fastest speeds and best service for some arbitrarily low price that has nothing to do with the market. Good stuff is in demand. Blame your fellow consumers, not Comcast. Net neutrality is...

Re: Sure, it's pretty, but is it Art?

Brain scans show a complex string of numbers and letters in mathematical formulae can evoke the same sense of beauty as artistic masterpieces and music from the greatest composers. Mathematicians were shown "ugly" and "beautiful" equations while in a brain scanner at University College London. The ...

Rome: Total War seems absurdly easy as the Scythians (I did the text-file-edit trick to unlock all factions in campaign mode). Having almost no heavy cavalry and no infantry at all doesn't matter if you can spam horse archers.
