Re: Home $weet Home

Ha. I hadn't heard of him but if he's Canadian we might not be able to not watch. We did discover Monty Don and have been mostly watching shows about gardening. They show Mike Holmes shows on US cable networks. It's really interesting and informative, but it's also a show where they show pretty muc...

I recommend avoiding any and all Mike Holmes shows for the near future, unless you want 10,000 new reasons to panic. :)

Re: Food

We use Better than Bullion as well, because it's low fodmap, as opposed to stock / broth. It's also a lot easier to use just a little bit, rather than wasting a whole can / carton.

Re: cars and how they get that way

It'll be interesting to see if VW actually improves their quality to match the warranty (like Hyundai / Kia actually did) or if it's just a temporary measure to try to cancel out their reputation. And yes, I know that there are some (very limited number of) people who have had a trouble-free VW, but...

Re: Women in Music

Given that women are better-represented in orchestras, with multiple orchestras in the US having a greater than 1:1 ratio of women to men, and given that there are many types of bands in other countries that have high representation of women : No, I'm really not going to entertain the idea that wome...

Re: Women in Music

Putting aside the industry stuff, from my experience, those who choose to try and make a career out of being a musician are following a passion. They often do it despite facing a variety hardships that try and drive them out. Often with others telling them can't make it. I have never met a working ...

Re: Women in Music

I suspect vinyl sales have boosted revenues significantly at this point, too. So, I'll just raise this point about female rock bands; namely, do they have the same reasons for forming a band? Because there are really only two admittedly overlapping principal reasons guys start bands: either because...

Re: Good Cover Versions

That's just not true. The major label groups still own the huge majority of record sales. And those sales control who gets played on radio, satellite, and streaming stations that select music, because those guys are the ones with the promotional reach. That's where the majority of exposure comes fro...

Cheap food back then was still cheaper than expensive food back then. One of the greatest achievements of mankind has been the reduction of cost of food.

Re: Good Cover Versions

It's sexist when it gets PAST that to the recording industry, which diverts women into pop instead of rock, or roadblocks or breaks up girl bands because they're not pretty enough or because nobody likes all-girl bands. So what I'm saying is that you have a lot of selection out from cultural effects...

Re: Good Cover Versions

You're really defining down what "successful" is. Can you get by being a niche act on the internet using monetization and Patreon? Yeah. Can you get a lot of views? Probably. Is that "successful"? I don't really think so. That's the same as being a club band in years past. That's not being what woul...

Re: Good Cover Versions

It's kind of my point that to get to numbers 5 and 6 in this thread that anyone's heard of we're now into barely listenable punk and a hardly-known 80s metal band. I would imagine that there are definitely some girls in the US who decide they want to rock out, and run into a lot of sexist resistance...

Re: Good Cover Versions

No love for Sleater Kinney? I don't know if they're bigger than the Donnas, which is sad, because the Donnas were the one-trickiest of one-trick ponies last I heard anything by them. The Donnas had a lot of "exposure" because Atlantic Records got them in as many video games and movies as possible. ...

Re: Good Cover Versions

There's also the well known phenomenon of rock bands fronted by women getting horribly unbalanced coverage, most of the time causing big strife because it becomes the woman singer's band with a bunch of no-names. This has killed or significantly harmed a bunch of groups like No Doubt, Paramore, and ...

Re: Good Cover Versions

Even expanding out of rock doesn't exactly open up the list significantly. And expanding to duos as well (I personally think you need to be at least a 3 piece to be a band, but that's a personal definition. And you can even allow for additional musicians for live performances and even studio work de...

82 is really really big if you aren't 20 feet away. It's not like the number of pixels goes up from a 72 or 65" 4K. They just get farther apart.

Not in English. There are more in Japanese. And also all woman bands, which there are hardly any that have gotten popular, ever. Bangles, The Go Go's, and The Donnas are about it in the US. As much as I like them, I think you might be stretching it to call the Donnas popular. You're probably right,...

Re: Good Cover Versions

I think that there is just not anything resembling cultural support for girls playing instruments in the US. Flute and violin and keyboards is about it. There's no pop culture anything about girls in bands, even wind ensembles and orchestras, so even those groups end up being mostly boys. Compare th...

It’s definitely a thing. And at first I feel bad for people. But then I realize they’re angry in an uncool way and I’m like...oh, another one of these. Why are there so many? I blame online dating or something. They seem to have a lot of complaints about women’s profiles having height requirements ...

Re: Roolz of the Rode

I find wider sidewalks make it worse because they're what make people think they can ride a bike on the sidewalk at all. A lot of the time, it's prohibited because the sidewalks aren't wide enough. That is, in places where it is prohibited at all, which is fairly rare outside of city centers. But a...

Re: Roolz of the Rode

I'm more and more in favor of cycle tracks, and think that other vehicles like this should be in cycle tracks. Like there should be an 8 mph limit on sidewalks, and anyone faster than that should be in the cycle tracks. But I also think that wider sidewalks would help to deal with this kind of thing...
