Re: Food

Ah, I thought how you do it was the technically correct way.

Of course either way I end up with a sore hand due to not doing it enough.

Re: Food

I do the index and middle fingers with thumb pad on top stick, and bottom stick between ring finger and middle of thumb.

I thought most people just used index and thumb on top stick, and middle and thumb on bottom stick. My problem with that is not enough pinching force to keep food from falling.

Re: Food

I don't hold chopsticks "right", because it's way easier to use 3 fingers instead of 2. If I'm ever in Japan, they can laugh at me if they want.

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1

Since I've gotta burn vacation anyway, I came home a couple hours early. It was crap driving. And not supposed to stop snowing / switch to rain until like 4 PM.

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1

So despite saying it would be all rain or dhex's "wintry mix" (which usually includes rain), all we've gotten today is snow and sleet, and the temp is 4 degrees lower than expected. This might turn out to be a problem.

It means "caught on". And there are still specials to be had, like Verizon offering a free Google Pixel 3... if you put it on a new line. The deal to open a new contract is going to be significantly better. But the old "subsidized phone" wireless deals were just shifting the price from paid up fron...

2 days ago, weather predictions for tomorrow were 5-8 inches of snow. Yesterday, predictions were for 1-2 inches of snow. Now it's wintry mix.

I love the Jackson Kelly guitar body. I hate the Gibson Thunderbird body. But I'm not getting either, so it doesn't matter too much.

They seemed to cut you a big deal, but actually didn't because they priced their service to make up for the deal you got (with those penalties for trying to get out of your contract). I vastly prefer the current transparent pricing and a la carte phones.

What kind of monster carpets a dining room? We have carpeting in our dining room. It happens to be in a place that I intend to put hardwood in when we replace it, but I don't mind carpeting there. It's not like it gets used a lot for anything but storing stuff when we have to move it out of another...

Re: Speaking in tongues (the "learning languages" thread)

In my experience with Japanese (admittedly not that much), they mostly just say things in such a way as to avoid having to use counting words. And how it survives is with a bunch of people saying "This is how REAL {insert language name here} is spoken. You have to do it this way or SHAME!!!!" Just l...

Well, I'm a born-n-bred swamp yankee and can't tell jackfruit from breadfruit neither, but I do like a cheery fire on cold, rainy, or snowy, nights. Even if it is gas-fired. Breadfruit? Jackfruit? Countra JasonL, fireplaces are the biggest footprint sucking, architecture complicating, waste of spac...

Ugh, I'd rather cut off my foot than go back to renting. Shared ceilings and floors again? Community laundry room? Noooooooooo. I've had a taste of freedom and I'm too spoiled to go back. I rented 3 different places in my life, and always had washer / dryer in my rental unit. Granted, one was the k...

That one of those amazon links that don't show up for other people? I don't see the one you're buying.

ETA: If you quote, you can see the link. Yes, that should be fine. Polarity, Voltage, and current all match. The different in what plugs into the wall is just what they decided to use for that cord.

Re: The Techno-Bleg Thread

Huh. I don't think I've ever interacted with a monitor that didn't just plug directly into the wall. It's just a design decision whether to put the AC-DC adapter inside the housing of the monitor, or to keep it outside. Every flat-panel monitor is going to have one anyway, and there are pros and co...

Re: Home $weet Home

I'm pretty much orthogonal to all you guys, I think. We have a breakfast nook adjacent to the kitchen (with a bay even), and a small table in it. We have a separate dining room on the other side of the kitchen with a normal door opening, but it's then got an archway to the living room. We have a 10-...

Re: The Techno-Bleg Thread

The answer is that it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is that you have a cord that matches the power brick (or that it comes with one), and that the power brick then has the correct connector to your monitor, especially polarity . Assuming that it actually does meet the same output specs...

Hey, it's an opportunity to be unproductive, or over budget, or even find some way to say that fixing it isn't in your scope and you need more money! The constructors that build our projects are great at finding those opportunities. "Hey, we wanted to build it this other way because we thought it wo...

I mean, things happen, but Brian Kemp has just completely trashed any benefit of the doubt you could possibly give him. It makes me start to wonder if an election can be thrown out entirely and a new one ordered.

Ellie can't have it all because I want some too. I do not care for dark meat.

And sous vide cooking of chicken breasts at about 148 degrees for 2 hours keeps it from being dry and overcooked.
