Re: Observations of the Random sort

Not all of the stone-carved buildings had people's names on them, though; plenty of "First National Banks" and the like. The point is that they put names in stone not because they thought the business would go on forever. It was because the business was successful enough to have built its own build...

Re: Observations of the Random sort

"We can't assume / assure we'll be in business forever" is probably the last last reason why a successful business constructing a new building doesn't set the business name in stone. Aesthetics is probably a lot more of a reason, both because stone / brick buildings of that size are relatively rare ...

I think what it really is is that Newfoundland is limiting retailer markup to 8%, based on things like this : Critics say the retail deck is stacked in favor of large corporations such as Canopy Growth and Loblaw. “If the profit margin is limited to 8%, then the retailer is only making 80 cents per ...

Re: Oh, Canada

8% cap on profits based on what? Profits are limited to 8% of revenue? How much of the shop owner's pay is put in that "profit"? I think that most storefronts would be happy with an 8% profit on revenue if it doesn't include paying the owners for time worked.

We use the heck out of live cable TV, so I'm nowhere near ready to get rid of it. But I've always found Verizon (for FIOS) to have better customer service than any other telecom company I've dealt with. And we just go with the 2-year contracts.

I want to sympathize with the guy in this article: https://reason.com/blog/2018/10/09/uc-davis-title-ix-me-too-sex-hook-up/amp?__twitter_impression=true But this one obvious omission bugs me: To avoid causing Becky to take any further action against James, I did not reach out to her for comment, th...

I think Ellie's main problem is that with the way the doors and windows are located, including the 'door' into the dining room and the kitchen, there is nowhere to fit the TV, David's required setup, and a couch, and still have any kind of flow. Plus Ellie doesn't like not sitting against a wall, an...

Has anybody ever changed around a front door so the hinges are on the other side? Is it a huge pain in the ass? Yes, it's a huge pain in the ass. Don't do this. I mean, you're better off buying a whole new door and frame, and hiring a carpenter to take the old one out and put the new one in. No. Do...

Even if you're being paid for goals accomplished, when you prove that accomplishing one goal no longer takes you the same amount of time, I don't think you can ethically coast on that forever after. Articles like this piss me off. It's great that people are open and supportive of local immigrants, but they don't give two shits about supporting politicians that would screw said immigrants over and are terrified of those policies being enforced. https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a23471864/de...

The faster pace really works for me! But I'm weird like that. I don't mind some faster paced things (like the only movie reviews on youtube I can bother to sit through are Bob Chipman's, and he's going 5 miles a minute), but I just felt on MST3K like they throw in anything they could conceivably sa...
