Re: Words I Happen to Dislike

I don't understand stan. Like is it meant to refer to superfans or toxic fans or people who hate shit? I have seen it used in a number of different ways and since I wasn't disaffected enough in my suburban high school to listen to Eminem I have no frame of reference. It's a self-reference for super...

Re: Damn database problems

Is anyone else seeing tapatalk use up a ton of data recently? It's used over 500 MB of data in the last 10 days for me, and it used to be more like 50 MB for a month. Wondering if this is their new push to get you to buy the ad-free premium: "We're going to serve you these data sucking ads until you...

Re: What the hell should I be staring at?

Yeah, I'd go along with a Goblin Slayer recommendation for you at least to try. You also can't do too badly with Makoto Shinkai's movies, although the early ones tore me up (Children who Chase Lost Voices, Voices from a Distant Star, 5cm per Second). The more recent ones are a lot more hopeful at th...

Re: What time do you normally go to bed?

I've been abusing the lack of sleep lately, getting up at 6 and not going to sleep until midnight or later. A little more on weekends (up at 9, but going to bed at midnight). And on top of that, my stupid cats keep waking me up at 5.

Not that I'm a conservative whisperer or anything, and Trumpism aside, but I think they see themselves as fighting a losing battle to hang onto some kind of common national myths and social institutions that are the only thing that make the US a Nation. They hate po mo talk primarily because of thi...

Re: What the hell should I be staring at?

So I just finished Neon Genesis Evangelion. I also recently watched Dallos . I'm enjoying catching up on a corner of culture I'm largely unfamiliar with. What are some other anime series I should watch? I'm looking for reasonably complex/mature, minimal 'if my wife walks in she'll think I'm a perv'...

Re: The Techno-Bleg Thread

It might be something that you could pay an installer about 2 hours worth of work to do. Would you want more wires run? Like maybe from the prime place to set the router? They could probably also run coax to it. Our house is about the same way (built in 1998). There is coax and phone in every single...

I probably need to figure out my wiring. There’s a bundle of cat 5 in the basement but I don’t see it run into a junction It may be that the house is wired, but the previous owners took the switch with them, or that they were all connected to their ISP router that they needed to return. You might b...

Looks neat, but I'm wondering why they went with the hard "Mega Action Movie Trailer" cut, music, and ambience. Seems a little overly dramatic and combative when they're talking about togetherness and drawing in families and casuals. I mean, I know those things can get cutthroat, but seems like you'...

Also, I have spotty wifi in back deck/patio area. Cable modem is in office near from of house and I want to use wired connection to desktop in that office, so I can’t really move the modem and router as a unit into the center of the house. What’s the best way to get improved signal in the back yard...

Finished it in under 2 hours, including the trip to Lowes for the replacement refill stack and valve. Figured since I'm in there, I might as well replace those parts since they're over 10 years old. Gave me a good opportunity to get the wire brush and scrub out all the gunk and corrosion.

I also think it's important to remember that everyone's on a continuum between two theoretical maxima here. I'm pretty sure the study was focusing on the two ends, but not saying those two ends represent everyone. So there's plenty of room in the middle for people who don't have strong reactions, an...

I seem to have several concepts bundled in my head wrt this kind of "authoritarian". I'm not sure I really know what they mean. If the definition of authoritarian here is just "values sameness and i skeptical of otherness" ok fine, but then the study is just "people who are skeptical of otherness a...

I don't know. I've read about situations where alliances were made with the vastly different. For example, when France allied with the Ottoman Empire against the Austrians in the 1600s. I think the part that Eric quoted above hints at one reason for this: If you have someone else that you have made...

It may be that it lines up too well, but it does seem to give some insight on a lot of the behaviors I think we see from people. A lot of the "I don't have any problem with 'those' people, as long as they're not around me." And also a lot of the complaints that other people's behavior is "thrown in ...

Well, it's not really "authoritarianism" that it's talking about. It's just that they used "authoritarian" and "libertarian" to describe the two ends of their own scale in the study. Neither one is referring to the political constructs of the respective word. In the study, they used "authoritarian" ...

It's more the basis that "othering" works on: That focusing on differences sets off people who have an "authoritarian" mindset, who desire order and conformity. The presence of people who are somehow differe...

I read this Conor Friedorsdorf column a few days ago, and I like the distinction it makes that maybe people aren't as much "racist" as "difference-ist", especially in that the discussed study started out looking for differences based on 'authoritarian' and 'libertarian' "(Those labels are not to be ...

It's never good to come home and see a puddle of water next to the toilet. Looks like one of the tank bolts has rusted through, which is a "me" repair, as opposed to if it required the bowl to be moved / reset / replaced, which would be a plumber repair. I'll replace the valve and tank / bowl seal ...
