Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

What a silly question. Of course you evacuate and stand on the spots on the playground that are all 6 feet apart. And make sure you keep a shopping cart between you as you go down the stairs to get out of the building.

Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

I also think it's extremely disingenuous to "both sides" this issue when it's not like a Coke or Pepsi preference thing, it's a "one side is trying to keep people from a Constitutionally-protected right to participate in their country's governance." It might be a different story if there was actuall...

Re: Random covid-19 observations

So I don't know if my mail carrier is quarantined, if the USPS is in a slowdown or on strike or something (you'd think that would be big news even with the virus coverage), or what, but we have not gotten any mail in the last 3 days. Which is rather odd, even if it would just be junk mail. Perhaps a...

Why do people seem to credulously take Trump's "No one could have ever..." statements as anything more than Trump trying to minimize the fact that tons of people were saying whatever they relate to, and he just didn't listen? He's said it over and over again the whole time he's been in the spotlight...

Re: Petty annoyances

Everything worked fine until I upgraded the OS and now my 1TB drive is "read only" because it's formatted for windows (so why did it work before?). This is exactly the kind of thing that is driving me away from Apple. The only thing that kept me getting iPhones is that my wife has Samsung/Android a...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

Got our first experience with grocery delivery last night. They specified that some things might be out of stock, might have to accept substitutions, etc. Mostly ok but out of 5 or 6 things we didn't get I'm hugely bummed that the bottle of alcohol (sanitizing type) and bread yeast didn't show up. ...

So, I need suggestions and I need them ASAP on a desktop gaming computer complete (can't be home-built from components) somewhere in the $1k - $2k range. That should include, though they could be separate plug and play, a monitor, camera and keyboard. It needs to be bought and delivered and up and ...

On the other hand, if there was a Dem administration in the White House, and the administration response to a virus that was especially deadly to the very conservative and borderline paranoid elderly population was anything less than "all measures possible to protect the old people, including closin...

Also, most government agencies know that working with a contractor that is not believing in a project is a recipe for ultimate failure and cost overruns. Forcing a contractor to do something they no longer care about is not the way to success.

As of 8 PM tonight, Maryland will be under a Stay-at-Home order. Supposed to stay at home unless going out for "work, food, or other fundamental reason", which seems vague enough that it couldn't withstand too much of a challenge in court, but I supposed that's not really the point. I don't know if ...

I don't know how many times he's left it out, but I've read quite a few of Isaac Chotiner's interviews where he includes a lot of really unflattering (to the interviewee) back and forth for completeness, usually demonstrating exactly the same thing as this: that the person being interviewed is reall...

Also. My time has come. Tonight, I'm having to babysit a fall risk patient suspected of covid. No available nursing staff. I know how to get the vitals (and pretty much nothing else) so I volunteered.

There will be more of this.
Keep as safe as you can, Pham.

I finally calibrated the double KitchenAid oven I knew to be not behaving well. It's dramatically shitty in both ovens. Does not hit peak temperature and does not maintain within 30 degrees of specified temperatures. Set for 400, you get 375 when it says 400, then it drops to like 325 before coming...

Ceiling fixture in the pantry replaced! The old one was flickering (probably a loose connection, cause it did it with multiple bulbs), so got a surface mount LED fixture. Now my wife wants to replace more.

I actually went to see them for my birthday one year, because a ticket to the Globetrotters was a lot cheaper than a regular season Bullets game. That was at the Capital Center outside DC, so a pretty big arena, but it definitely wasn't a big crowd.

Is it just that people don't pay attention? I just can't fathom anyone hearing what that piece of garbage says about the virus and saying "oh yeah, I'll go along with that." Is it just that he's on TV more and "Hey, he's on TV, he must be in charge."?

An inspirational quote from the President of the United States, demonstrating his leadership during this time of pandemic: "You want ventilators and masks from the federal government's reserves to treat your citizens? Well, governors have to treat me well, it's a two-way street." I'd really like to...

Non-packaged produce is probably as safe or safer than packaged. You should be thoroughly washing all of it anyway before use, and then most stuff gets peeled. And then lots of the time it gets cooked. I definitely don't begrudge the buying of preprocessed and packaged produce tho, lots of people de...

To be fair, there is never much in the way of excess capacity in ICU beds, even during normal times. They're pretty much always almost at capacity. My wife says there were plenty of times that they had to keep someone in the OR for hours because there wasn't room in the PACU (Post-Acute Care Unit) f...

Tom Scott, who I think generally does great videos, put up a long video about YouTube's Content ID workaround, and copyright law in general. Longish, especially for him, at 42 minutes, but I thought it was well done.
