Re: Happy Independence Day!

I wasn't home last night, so don't know how it was here. Was hanging out with a friend, and we spent the whole night with headphones on playing music, so I didn't hear anything.

Re: Random covid-19 observations

I just cannot drink non-diet sodas now. They're far too clingy and sweet. I don't really drink the Coke Zero even. I stick with a can of Diet Coke in the morning (around 9), and then maybe a can of Caffeine-Free Diet Coke in the afternoon.

Re: Random covid-19 observations

Yeah, there's a lot of Coke Zero, just no Cherry or Caffeine Free, or even Cherry Vanilla or whatever other terrible flavors they have.

Re: Random covid-19 observations

I don't know if anyone else drinks enough 'fringe' Coke products to notice, but all of the stores around here have only 4 Coca-Cola branded sodas available: Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, and Sprite. No flavors, no caffeine-free colas, no anything besides those 4. And since my wife mainly drinks Cherry...

SpaceX has launched a GPS III satellite , which is pretty cool. This bit made me twitchy, though: GPS III, Lockheed Martin explains, will make GPS three times more accurate. Gene McCall, former chair of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, wrote in National Defense Magazine in April that this s...

I love the mix of cool and corny in these guys. I only which I was that cool: NINGEN ISU - The Color Out of Space. Their overall tone / chord patterns kinda remind me of Ghost.

I’m very surprised that not everyone uses WGS 84 by now.

ETA - like even 15 years ago, in my line of work finding something that was in NAD was like finding a Dead Sea scroll.
Everything we do is in NAD83/91 coordinates, either with the NAVD88 or NGVD29 datums.

Re: You Learn Something New Every Day

There is no standard foot in the US and different states may use different definitions of a foot. Well, it's more that there are 2 standard definitions of a foot and states have picked one or the other. But honestly, this is a lot less of a problem than you might think. I'm sure there are some proj...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

For better or for worse, those numbers don't really exist. They're pretty hard numbers to generate, to be fair. But I've seen a bunch of epidemiologists etc. mourning the fact that we don't have them. Why would those numbers (at least ballpark) be any harder to get than the numbers of recovered cas...

Re: Petty annoyances

The maker of our (wet) cat food changed their packaging from 5.5 oz cans (the 3 inch diameter ones) to 6.4 oz TetraPaks. And raised the price for a case (because it's almost 20% more food). The TetraPaks do close without having to use a separate lid, but that's the only way they're "better". And the...

So much for “conservatives aren’t anti-immigration, we’re only anti-illegal immigration.” Trump tore that mask off pretty quickly. https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/06/trump-taps-the-brakes-on-immigration/ "We're not anti-immigration, not publicly when we can say that we're anti-illegal immigrati...

I’m old enough to remember when pro-government types was trying to get pro-mask libertarians suppressed on social media. Because I’m more than three months old. I try very hard to ignore social media, so I'll own my ignorance here. When did this happen? I mean, I see the point, because there was a ...

We’re fucked. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/22/larry-kudlow-says-a-second-wave-of-coronavirus-cases-isnt-coming.html Does Trump just keep Kudlow around because then he can point to him and say "There's a guy who's wrong more than me!" That reminds me, I've been watching some YouTube videos about DAWs and recording lately, and some of them are created by Brits who pronounce "garage band" as "garridge band", which sounds even weirder to me than just pronouncing "garage" as "garridge" does. I've run into the issue of "nobody is at ...

We’ve had states with 100% mail in voting for decades without incident. Why would now be different? Do you know how they validate voters? Jeff and I did a mail-in vote for the recent primary (in Georgia); the ballots were mailed to our house, then we sent them back in envelopes which had our names ...

I thought hes been using two hands to drink water since before inauguration. Am I the only one who noticed? He definitely has been using 2 hands at times since 2016. This one was significant to me because of the obvious impossibility of getting the glass up to his mouth with his right hand. It's ev...

If you're asking about Ellie, I was assuming interior, since they live in a townhouse and there's usually not much to paint on the exterior.

I'm pretty much always in favor of reserved seating for things. Makes my life much easier, and I'm better at planning in advance than most people are so I get better seats. (This is my least favorite thing about Southwest, for instance.) I'm exceedingly willing to take the "no reserved seats" for S...

What's weird to me is that people to be focusing on the stairs thing (the President is a 74-year-old man after all) rather than the waterglass thing, which to me looks bizarre, like he's had a stroke or something. It's brief, but he actually tries to lift a glass to his mouth with his right hand an...
