Re: The Future Will Despise Us Brutal Bastards

The Obama pandemic playbook called for clear, consistent, and unified messaging about risks and precautions, which Trump roundly ignored. Would that have headed off the partisan divide about masks and closures? Who can say. My position is that it *would* have been a lot less divisive if there had b...

Re: Voting methodologies

I think that's a good range, but on the long side. I'd rather people be limited out faster, like with the Senate I'd go with either 2 or 3 6-year terms, and with the House I think that 6 or 8 2-year terms is fine. I think I'd prefer keeping the House terms at 2 years so that there is the possibility...

Re: Whither the Democratic Party?

Yeah, I would say that's a pretty unreasonable read on what everyone else is saying. That's certainly not what I'm saying. You're seemingly equating "Any other president would have taken steps to tamp down and defuse the divides on these issues, but Trump's statements, actions, and policies accentua...

Re: Whither the Democratic Party?

Why do you think anyone has said that because Trump was the catalyst for the things discussed earlier, that now that would all go away? That's not what I mean, at least. The direction of the GOP was set by Trump, but after 4 years of him, there's a lot of people on that path. The things that happene...

Well, do you think another President would have reacted with "very fine people... on both sides" after Charlottesville? Would Charlottesville even have happened under another President from the 2016 crew? I think there's a direct line from Charlottesville through Trump rallies becoming increasingly ...

Re: Whither the Democratic Party?

The general public perception is that Trump did a really good job with the economy but was personally a fuckup. Most people are financially better off than they were four years ago. That was true before covid hit, they don't blame him for the covid-related economic slowdown, and many people are in ...

Yes, they're tremendously stupid. Or at least acting that way. And it's keeping the rubes going along with them. My neighborhood has two bicycle repair shops: a long-time local shop, and snooty high-end shop. Snooty high-end shop is the kind of place where if you take a bike in and it isn't some $500 hipster bullshit they sneer at you for having a peasant bike, so fuck them, and I always take ours to the olde...

In this particular case—if we shut down the bars and pay them to stay closed—there's an obvious place for that consumption reduction to happen: people aren't consuming going-to-bars! Unlike that policy in the UK they tried where they gave people subsidies to use at restaurants to keep them in busin...

Re: Random covid-19 observations

I think there is a plausible rationale for the 10pm closure time. It can be argued that a not-insignificant portion of the people going to those establishments earlier in the evening are there to eat, but that after 10, everyone there is just there to drink and hang out. Hell, most bars have the kit...

Re: Orange is the new President

We always knew Trump would be a sore loser, but the way he's blocking Biden from getting briefings during the transition is simple sabotage of US interests. I do wonder at what point it stops being "obstinate" and "just Trump" and "joking" to "this is actually an attempted coup, and people need to ...

Ask your anti-lock brakes and vehicle stability control. They're far better than most people give them credit for. And given that an autonomous vehicle should have better programming to not end up going too fast in bad weather (indeed if it even would go out in bad weather), they should be much safe...

Re: Predictions for 2030

I mostly agree with DAR: An automated vehicle designed to mix on roadways with human-driven cars will have better reaction time, better sensory inputs, and "pay better attention". They will also have better judgment, at least as far as "how fast should I go" and "should I change lanes" and other bas...

This post from Radley Balko's thread argues that the individual ward data, which was used in the original post to 'raise questions' about the results, was too fragmented to provide a meaningful analysis. It seems eminently logical to me that you'd end up with violations of this heuristic when you'r...
