Re: Portable Techno-Capitalism

I just use a soft gel-type case on the back of my Pixel 3. I was mostly just going for something that added a little bit of thickness and grippiness to it, rather than the super slippery glass/metal/plastic. And maybe just a skosh of impact protection.

It doesn't count, Mo, because it only carries trillions of ton-kilometers of freight per year, not millions of bored passengers who are wondering why they're on this 2 day train versus the 4 hour flight they could have taken...

It's been a while since I've seen such a good transportation policy for the end of the 19th century like that one.

People's umbrage is mostly to cover up the fact that they feel completely stupid for not understanding spying on them is what that information would be used for.

Re: Market Failure!

Ok, I guess I have no idea what's going on with the kids nowadays. My lens is that I was so eager to get work experience and discovered much to my chagrin that after graduation people really didn't care about that nearly as much as high level skill, and that the work experience I was so eager to ge...

What could they explain that makes it acceptable? "Hey, you need to sign this, it means you can't work for any other company in a related field for the next x years. And if you don't sign it, you can walk out the door right now (and not get your college credit). I think the presence of non-competes ...

Agree with the scapegoating take though. It's not that they aren't bad and don't advocate for awful stuff, they do and are. It's that the discussion so often focuses on them that you are led to believe they are material among representative prisoner suffering issues, and the numbers aren't there. M...

I'm not even sure we are being cavalier, we have a program to install malware into Russian energy grids, and that's just one thing that has been intentionally leaked. I think that there is a complex set of situations going on wherein you may not want to directly pound the table and escalate. It's c...

Can I also just say how much I hate the phrase "luxury yurt"? And yes, I am aware of what a grim commentary it is on my television habits that I've heard that phrase so many times. [emoji38] I'd be tempted to stay in a luxury yurt for a vacation or long weekend. I'll never, ever, go glamping howeve...

My new fridge has the wrap. Also not French doored. Side by side counter depth. Not awesome. See, the big problem here is counter depth. aka "No space refrigerator". And yeah, cabinet panels look like butt, even if they match perfectly. For the record - yes this fridge is too small by a lot. I find...

One of my Amazon orders has not arrived because the USPS is claiming that they could not access our building, period. This strikes me as highly unlikely. That will randomly happen to some of my Amazon orders with USPS or UPS, and it makes no sense, because I get something from Amazon about twice a ...

The CBO report linked wasn't speaking of an up-front cost to immigration. It was talking about the gross expenditures in Education, Healthcare, and Law Enforcement attributed to unauthorized immigrants, with minor effort given to accounting for the revenue generated by those same people. Perhaps the...

I mean I've read elsewhere that it's not taken into account because they simply don't know how to track it. I felt that was fair. I think it's fair to say "We don't know how to track it, so we really didn't try", but not really fair to say that and then turn around and say "This big number is how m...

It's convenient to say that a bunch of stuff is "not quantifiable" and thereby determine that Group X is not paying their way. I'm sure there are plenty of legal resident populations and native-born populations you could apply those same standards to, and come up with similar results. Plus, what gro...

I see a lot of those electric rent-a-scooters in certain trendy Atlanta neighborhoods, and always wondered (regarding scooters in general, not just the electric app-operated ones): why do they only ever make them with two wheels rather than four (more like a roller skate than a roller blade, IOW), ...

It's a lot easier to blame someone or something else for your failings, instead of using self-reflection or acknowledging the false nature of decisions you've made. People will go to great lengths to justify their previous conclusions.

I really wonder what these "hundreds of billions of dollars" that 'illegal' immigrants are costing us are from. That seems like a total asspull, and ignores the economic benefit of a class of people that usually don't go around causing trouble.
