Re: cars and how they get that way

I was in a budget planning meeting today and the campus planner went off on a brief tangent about how do you handle needing way more parking on your campus now, but knowing self-driving cars are coming down the pike (except you don't know exactly when)? It was a really interesting thing to ponder! ...

It's not necessarily the journalism itself, but a great statement by Charles Whitaker, the Dean of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications about the coverage of student protests at the school: https://www.medill.northwestern.edu/news/2019/sta...

Re: Music for the Masses

I don't care for pieces that are a whole orchestra of strings sawing away for some interminable time. When I can find it, I much prefer a wind ensemble arrangement.

I agree with this hot take. The Mona Lisa sucks. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/06/arts/design/mona-lisa-louvre-overcrowding.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share I've never been to France, never seen the Mona Lisa, and I would agree. It sounds like a thoroughly dreadful experience, and maybe the complete a...

Re: Food

First time doing pan-frying (shallow frying) and it worked out really well. We were making a tempura-battered tilapia (from Hello Fresh) and we did great with the timing, temperature, and batter consistency. I love fried fish, and this ended up pretty darn good. The salad that it came with was trash...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

But you have two hands! (I presume; tell me if I'm wrong) One hand holds elastic down and the other one aims if necessary. So none of this is an issue if I'm not also navigating the fly of my _pants_. But I need one [more] hand to handle that if the fly of the underwear doesn't roughly line up with...

Re: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TWICE ANNUAL GRIPE THREAD

It's a plot by auto body shops to drum up more business. Or maybe a plot to expose Vampires, because apparently nobody plans ahead with their sun visor, so they come around the corner, or over the rise, and recoil in horror at the sudden appearance of the sun.

Re: Thumb a Hundred Bucks: The Cashless Economy Thread

Actually, I can see checks making a comeback, because with check deposits that only need the person depositing the check to take a picture of the check for their app, they become a lot more convenient. So that gives you that ability to transfer relatively large amounts of money to another individual...

Re: Food

I'm pretty sure that almost no matter where you are, any fried clams you could buy at a restaurant are gonna be frozen anyway. That's why so many places have them on the menu, cause they don't go bad, and don't take up a lot of space in the freezer. Maybe there are a couple places in New England whe...

Re: Cool little things

E-drums are actually pretty great onstage in my experience. Our band switched to them a couple years ago, and it really makes a difference as far as overall noise floor on stage. Especially playing little tiny bars like we do, it means that our minimum volume for backline and monitors doesn't have t...

Re: Food

There was an article I remember from like 10 years ago in Slate, about how the times that they come up with to put on recipes are, at best, scientific wild-ass guesses and usually are just wild-ass guesses. They're never based on how long it would take some novice cook to do it. They're never based ...

Re: Food

We actually make-from-scratch a version of cream of mushroom soup for use in recipes that call for it (which is only a couple that we use). The recipe for that takes into account the consistency and water content of condensed soup so that it's a direct replacement, but nowhere near as salty and a lo...

Re: Sexy Steve Jobs Costume: The Theranos Thread

Yeah, Theranos was straight up snake oil. It didn't work. Ever. It wasn't that it didn't scale, or that it was too difficult to use correctly. It just plain never worked nor was it ever going to work, and that fact was fraudulently hidden from customers and investors. Holmes didn't get anything near...
