Just finished The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. by Stephenson and Galland. Fun light read for Stephenson.

Yeah, at the $2/sqft range vinyl is the way to go. The newer laminate isn't as prone to chipping as the old formica based stuff is but yeah, the patterns are horrible. A buddy had "groutable tile" similar to these put in: https://www.homedepot.com/p/TrafficMASTER-Ceramica-Cool-Grey-12-in-x-12-in-Res...

Re: Petty annoyances

Might there be some sort of "blockage" between the outdoor unit and the start of the interior vent system? That is the only theory I have left (not that I know enough about central AC units to make many educated guesses). The way a central A/C works is pretty simple. The big, noisy box outside comp...

Re: It's not the size of the screen...

Been watching The Terror. Clearly inspired by research for Taboo; it's a fantastical dramatization of John Franklin's lost expedition. Pretty decent acting and as long as you can suspend disbelief for a rampaging spirit bear then the show's not bad. One episode left in the season and they are alrea...

Re: cars and how they get that way

I thoroughly enjoy driving, even in fast moving traffic like the 75/85 merge in Atlanta. Rush hour, bumper to bumper at 40mph sucks though. A major issue here is people who can't drive because they learned in some backwoods locale. "Yes, you are driving under the speed limit, waaay under. Yes, you C...

Oh, hey look, SyFy cancelled a great show after it's third season. That's never happened before. I presume the Expanse? I'll also note thy just "announced"* the final season of Face Off meaning they will have no unscripted shows. So, I guess it's going to all sharknado all the time. *By "announced"...

I'll also point out they have been doing that for much of the last decade. When I first signed up for their service years ago it was actually cheaper to get their lowest TV service and internet service combined rather than just getting the internet alone. Same here only my Internet provider is also...

I bought some coarse-ground wheat farina (basically Cream of Wheat, only much cheaper because it's not "Cream of Wheat" brand, but from one of the Indian supermarkets). I just can't get over the use of perfectly good appetizers (wings) in place of a couple of legs. Better yet would be necks or backs but yeah, no go there.

This month I had planned on purchasing a bunch of materials for recovering the floors in the house from Lowe's. Mostly because of a better selection for our area but also because I have a Lowe's CC that I haven't used in a bit. Credit monitoring just notified me that my CC account has been closed. T...

Those white bin/drawer things in some of the cabinets -- it looks like they're not set directly on the cabinet shelves, but are mounted on some sort of roller/groove thing. Was that already in the cabinetry, or was it something you installed? I'm so sorry, somehow I thought I'd already answered you...

Re: cars and how they get that way

I hadn't seen anything since 2016 so I was kinda hoping they'd reverted back to former levels of kush and it was just another ding on the 3. But yeah, the cheapness of the interior was one of big criticisms when the new "under 15k" Jetta's appeared on the market.

Re: cars and how they get that way

The GTI will definitely perform better than the 3 and probably feel a touch more luxe on the interior . It felt a bit too midlife-crisisy for me to actually go with, but I thought long and hard about it. Really? All Golf/Jetta I have seen post 2011 have gone with that hard plastic crap used in most...

It's also considerably pricier than bouillon, no doubt. Since I remain shamefully under-employed, and thus cannot bring noticeable sums of money into the household, I at least use my frugalness powers to find ways of reducing the money I cause to go out. Well, I mean shit, leftover ramen seasoning ...
