Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds

I mean people make money by exploiting in-game item mining, and having a 'public Facebook account' that is moderated by a third party is already common. My CEO has a Facebook profile, but it's not a accurate view of her own actions at all, even the keystrokes and clicks are physiologically from anot...

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds

But if it's easy to game, you won't have to escape it, because it won't be used because it's not accurate.

This all assumes that FB lasts as an institution, which seems unlikely to me.

Re:social credit, if it's responsive, you can game it at no cost by unfriending someone. And why would I join or stay on a platform with IRL consequences for posting habits? Now, what we *really* need is an Elo ranking for pro-social behavior. It's not like you need to be on Facebook or connected t...

Re: Inequality

It's not easy, and not trivial, to keep civilization from returning to howling darkness. Success is not an accident, and it's fragile. I don't think that it's helpful to say, "Well, you did a good job *here*, so it must be negligence that you haven't done a good job everywhere!". Consider this : Why...

Re: The Abortion Thread

The State will probably cover or mitigate her medical expenses if she qualifies for TANF, and she will qualify for a one time, one year exemption from participating in mandatory work readiness activities, which means a new mother can get cash and food support for almost nothing in return. If she nee...

I don't understand the expectation that we can maintain middle class suburban living standards across a massive geographic area, especially when people insist on living in desolate and inconvenient areas. I am appalled that clean water and sanitation are at such low levels, but that could be a sign ...

Re: Podcasts - Watcha listening to?

But I came to you all today to bring almost two hours of Sam Harris talking anti-natalism with a Afrikaans accent blues. http://pca.st/d3N5 I can only vouch for the first 20-30 minutes, but so far Harris argues against the notion, and they have some good discussion about Buddhism. I thought people h...

He's OK in small doses. He stops in the middle of a perfectly good piece on automobile safety and talks about how insane it is that "our automobiles have such strict safety measures and regulations, because of Nader, but nothing of the sort for guns because of the NRA". Then he serves back to auto ...

Re: No touching! - sexual impropriety thread

There's a line between 'I can explain why you shouldn't' and 'creepy/gross' that turns into a motte and bailey. I can tell a friend, 'don't touch people you just met, even if it's in a friendly way, it's about personal space'. I can't seem to get people to define 'creepy' beyond "I don't like that".

If you don't care about how bad the process is, you don't care about how bad the process is. Someone just demonstrated why the process is bad. If you want to keep pretending that it's reliable, you'll be outraged the next time it gets exploited. Same same.
