Re: Podcasts - Watcha listening to?

But I came to you all today to bring almost two hours of Sam Harris talking anti-natalism with a Afrikaans accent blues. http://pca.st/d3N5 I can only vouch for the first 20-30 minutes, but so far Harris argues against the notion, and they have some good discussion about Buddhism. I thought people h...

He's OK in small doses. He stops in the middle of a perfectly good piece on automobile safety and talks about how insane it is that "our automobiles have such strict safety measures and regulations, because of Nader, but nothing of the sort for guns because of the NRA". Then he serves back to auto ...

Re: No touching! - sexual impropriety thread

There's a line between 'I can explain why you shouldn't' and 'creepy/gross' that turns into a motte and bailey. I can tell a friend, 'don't touch people you just met, even if it's in a friendly way, it's about personal space'. I can't seem to get people to define 'creepy' beyond "I don't like that".

Roman Mars is terrible in a way that falsely leads me to think I can tolerate him because I'm interested in the subject matter.

He keeps showing up and ruining design podcasts.

Ok, but I didn't step up to defend signature petitions, I said that online comments are garbage. I can accept that petitions are garbage too. There's no fight to be had here.

I feel for those that signed this petition in good faith, but the Ohio Revised Code is very clear about what is required for part petitions to be valid," County Elections Director Pat McDonald said in a written statement. "The part petitions are not overly complex, but they still need to be thoroug...

If you don't care about how bad the process is, you don't care about how bad the process is. Someone just demonstrated why the process is bad. If you want to keep pretending that it's reliable, you'll be outraged the next time it gets exploited. Same same.

Re: Net Neutrality

That's a reason they shouldn't care about any of them on either side. A 'fake' comment by a bot has the same semantic value as a copy/paste by someone who's ignorant on the subject. Open comment periods post-Internet aren't very valuable.

Why should they care? Peeps are copy pasting responses that they get through chain letters on FB.

Re: Observations of the Random sort

Re: predestination, yeah, I did some reading on The Elect to try and figure out the concept, but it's pretty convoluted. I think predestination vaguely matches the idea (from Right and Left alike) that media and culture is a irresistibly corrupting influence.

Re: Observations of the Random sort

So I'm actually reading Albion's Seed, and it seems that Puritanism is more about stated beliefs that cannot ever be maintained, and the expectation that you are a horrific sinner. If you aren't self-flagelating, you are suspect because you aren't recognizing your own sins. Of course people are hypo...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

It's a rule based on correctly judging others subjective preferences. It's bad. A better rule is 'Ask before you sit close to somebody you don't know' because it teaches you to solve the problem instead of guessing, and doesn't promote a world where we ask consent for every social interaction.

Ok, so who should pay and how do we meter the costs? Right now the piper calls the tune and companies extract money for services at bottlenecks, just like any other industry. If they can't get paid to transfer ownership because DRM can't keep up, they will charge for what they *can* control, which i...
