Re: When do you prepare your tax return?

You left out the "it depends on how much money I'm going to get back" option.

Re: When do you prepare your tax return?

While the form names and the deadline (April 30th in Canada) are different, the principle is the same.

Since I max my RRSP contributions every year, I get about $1000 back from the money that has been taken off my pay. Therefore, I file ASAP. (And hence voted for "As soon as I get my W-2s" [=T4s in Canada]).

In those few years in which I owe them money, I file as late as possible.

Re: When do you prepare your tax return?

I already got my state refund back; will get Federal in a week or so. Mortgage interest and daddy's little tax deduction means I get some of my stolen money back. I need it.

Addendum: As soon as I wrote this, I went and checked my bank account. The Fed refund was already there.

So I have a huge chunk of change in my checking account; shame it will all have to go for paying off credit cards. I'm looking forward to paying off my Chase card and then telling them to suck my balls. That will have to be my main treat to myself.

Also signatures are noticeably absent. - Smacky

Re: When do you prepare your tax return?

Since I usually have to pay in a few hundred bucks, I normally wait until the week before the deadline. On the few occasions I've gotten a refund, I've filed ASAP.

BTW - did anyone else (in the US) get a packet in the mail to make quarterly estimated tax payments for 2010? WTF? I've never gotten that before. Is the government so hard up they're demanding payment 'up front'? Are they gonna stop withholding? Fuckers.

Re: When do you prepare your tax return?

Since I was 18, any tax refund money has always gotten used on spring break trips. So I've always done my own to save money and done them as soon as I get my w2.

The last two years my friend and now girlfriend has been doing my taxes. Now I don't remember how to do my taxes even if I wanted to do them. Now I'm wondering now if my gf is implementing a subtle plan to make me feel helpless and cling to her.

Feb-March. It just always seems to work out that way.

They send that out periodically to people who regularly have to pay. If you wind up paying a lot, it's usually easier to break it down into four payments, so some people take them up on it.

I chose "at noon on April 15" although it's actually more like "a week or two before April 15."

You're not a freelancer by chance, are you? I know they have to pay quarterly, and "estimate" what they are going top make for that quarter.

No, I has me a regular ol' job at a small company. Shem's reply makes sense in hindsight. It's been 4 years in a row now that I've had to pay in, so supplying me with payment vouchers seems appropriate, I guess. Prior to that, we actually oscillated between paying in and receiving a refund every couple of years now that I went back and checked records. So my "usually pay in" comment wasn't quite accurate.

I've used TurboTax for the last 6 years and have filed electronically, so getting a packet from the IRS was a bit surprising.

Prepare? As soon as the paperwork comes in, gotta know how much i owe the bloodsuckers. I try to adjust my W4s so i owe a couple hundred.
Of course it's filed at the last possible second on the 15th. Kinda a tradition @ the P household.

Re: When do you prepare your tax return?

I voted "Molon labe" in spite of the fact that, one I don't know what that means, and bee I file every year.

I don't file till Ap, but that's because every year my broker doesn't have his shit together before then.
