It can only be counter-clockwise (if your looking down at her head and not up at her... foot) because the animation includes her shadow. Without the shadow, it could work either way.
Actually this is bugging the shit out of me because it takes so much focus to make it go the other way. When I was younger, I could look at something like this and focus on it for a few minutes and then see it however I wanted with the blink of an eye. This is the first thing that makes me think I've lost something mentally to go with my general physical dilapidation.
So how does CW/CCW match up with right brained/left brained?
EDIT: CW=Right Brained=Emotions Feelings!
Bullshit! She's totally going CW! And I'm a left hemi man! I used logic and reasoning to make myself see her spin CCW. But I have to watch the shadow for that. I see her CW easily just by looking at her foot, or when I first see her. I definitely have some preference to make her go CW. But I am not, repeat NOT, some irrational, right-brained, touchy-feely, emotional retard. I am completely RATIONAL! I'M A VULCAN! DO YOU HEAR ME! A MOTHER-FUCKING VULCAN!
I can see it both ways. But it takes some concentration.
In any event, the shadows don't seem right to me, which is maybe how the illusion is possible. For the leg that stays straight up and down, it looks like the light is coming from behind the dancer. But for the leg that is sticking out, it seems like the light is from above, or either behind or in front depending on which way you see her turning, since the shadow shows up on only half the turn. When she is turning clockwise, it looks like the light has to be coming from a direction that makes the other leg's shadow impossible.
Ok, I can see it both ways now. The shadow was throwing me off, plus typically dancers would not rotate towards the extended leg like she does going clockwise. At least I don't recall any ballet moves like that.
I'm mostly right-brained, I guess, as I see it turning clockwise.
I've tried to concentrate and see it going counter-clockwise, but so far I just can't see that at all.
Look at the shadow of her lifted foot. Focus just on that. See it sweeping behind her. Imagine it continuing around in front of her. Then match it to her leg and the rest of her will be spinning CCW.
NOW try making her spin back CW again! Can't do it? Just glance at her flat foot. For me anyway it's extremely hard to see that foot spinning CCW. And the only way I can see CCW is to watch the shadow.
I can see it both ways and I can, with so-so success, make her shift. As for whether this has anything to do with being right brained or left brained, itself a dubious theory, I haven't the slightest idea.
I have tried to see it going counter clockwise, and cannot. All of my logic and reason tell me that apparently logic an reason are my weak points. Great.
My friend next to me sees it both ways an/or it changes so constantly he cannot make up his mind. This makes me HULK ANGRY! I will not rest until I can see her spinning the other way as well. damn.
EDIT: Also, at first I was all like, "Wow, nipples!" So maybe I'm not thinking with my brain at all.
AHA! SUCCESS! I can see it both ways. By utilizing the shadow as a point of reference I can make whatever it is I am thinking with perceive the dancer as spinning C-CW! The Universe is mine to control!
The shadow is totally the key. I think that if you see her spinning CCW, you are shadow brained. Also, when I see her going CCW, I feel like she is going to tip over, given my knowledge of anatomy, physics, and top-heavy broads.
Block the dancer with your hand and focus only on the shadow of her lifted foot. You will only see it sweep past behind her other foot. Mentally complete the circle as it comes around in front. Once you see the shadow going around CCW, marry the shadow to her leg and she will be turning CCW.
it changes constantly for me, so much so that it gives me a headache to look for an extended period of time.
I'm with D.A. Ridgely though, in that I've never bought into the silly left/right brain psychopop theory. But I don't know what it says about me that the image is constantly switching rotational direction.
EDIT: Srsly, and not that I am blaming anyone, but that shit just gave me a fucking migraine.
Left/right brain is definitely not psychopop. There is extensive research going back decades on it. Keep in mind though that the brain is an extremely complex machine. Some things are very strong, "the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body" is true for just about everybody. The left/right logic/emotion is certainly a real phenomenon, but it's not so straightforward.
The lines of demarcation are very blurry and there's communication between the two hemispheres. For example, the left hemisphere is dominant in such things as logic, details, and fact rules, while the right gets credit for "big picture" oriented, symbols and images, imagination rules. Now suppose you're trying to solve a geometry problem. Since the left side is the "math" side, it would seem to be a no-brainer (HA!) which side you are using most. But symbols and images are the language of math, and to solve the problem you need to keep the "big picture" in mind while applying your imagination.
Furthermore, the brain is remarkably mailable. If a portion of the brain is somehow damaged, it's function can be taken over by another part of the brain.
Left/right brain is definitely not psychopop. There is extensive research going back decades on it.
That's exactly right. It's neuroscience. I've actually been excluded from participating in MRI imaging studies because of my left-handedness, because the studies need to control for left-brain/right-brainedness. The fact that this is apparently a factor that needs to be controlled for would alone suggest that there is something scientific to the left/right distinction.
As for whether this has anything to do with being right brained or left brained, itself a dubious theory,
I knew I had read something about this recently, this is from a book on music and the brain:
"One finding at the macro level about the function of the brain is the popular notion about hemispheric specialization- the idea that the left half of the brain and the right half of the brain perform different cognitive functions. This is certainly true, but as with much of the science that has permeated popular culture, the real story is somewhat more nuanced.
To begin with, the research on which this is based was performed on right handed people. For reasons that aren't entirely clear, people who are left handed or ambidextrous sometimes have the same brain organization as right handers, but more often have a different brain organization. When the brain organization is different, it can take the form of a simple mirror image, such that functions are simply flipped to the opposite side. In many cases, however, left handers have a neural organization that is different in ways that are not yet well documented. Thus, any generalizations we make about hemispheric asymmetries are applicable only to the right handed majority of the population...
...Both sides of the brain engage in analysis and both sides in abstract thinking. All the activities require coordination of the two hemispheres, although some of the particular functions involved are clearly lateralized."
There's some neuroscience and there's some pop psychology, in fact, lots of pop psychology lurking in what is collectively called cognitive science these days. Yeah, different hemispheres do tend to control different sorts of abilities, but extrapolating from that empirical phenomenon to cheesy dichotomies like left brain people and right brain people is a leap of faith even Kierkegaard wouldn't make. (OTOH, it's well documented that left handed people are universally sinister.)
Yeah, different hemispheres do tend to control different sorts of abilities, but extrapolating from that empirical phenomenon to cheesy dichotomies like left brain people and right brain people is a leap of faith even Kierkegaard wouldn't make.
Well, duh. It's an internet test. 'Nuff said.
Neuroscience has nothing to do with pop psychology.
I'm guessing that the cues you focus on in order to determine which direction the dancer is turning might indeed give clues to whether your right or left brain is dominant. Like some people will focus on the shadow -- like, maybe that is a more "logical" approach to orienting the image -- and maybe other cues that other people pick up on (whatever those might be) might be more "intuitive."
Or maybe it's all bullshit. The test, that is -- the whole right-brain vs. left-brain thing definitely isn't.
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Piano man he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows the tune she hums
But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly
Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
you had a busy day today
Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man

I've tried the tricks above, mentally flipping the image left/right, closing each eye in turn, mentally rotating the image.
Always clockwise.
I'm changing my vote. She's turning deiseil.
Warren: I tried your trick of looking at only the shadow. I could see widdershins turning in the shadow, but when I looked back at the whole picture, it reverted to deiseil.

It doesn't change. It's a one dimensional silhouette. If you cover the top half with your hand, you can see it swinging back and forth, like a pendulum. It could be going in either direction, depending how your brain perceives it. It's an optical illusion, and pretty cool one. Thanks, Stevo!

I'll give my results in a later comment so I don't predisposition you when you read this to check the link.
Re: Is dancer (link) turning clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Is this a trick question? Because I cannot possibly see how she could be turning any other way than counter-clockwise.

Also, what kind of dancer is she? I can see her nipples.
